I’ve covered a few posts on personal Synology NAS here but there isn’t one that walks you through what’s it like when you first got it and boot it up. Today we will walk through step by step how to set up a Synology NAS from scratch.
Prerequisite:
- assume you have a Synology NAS ready to go
- download and install Synology Assistant
First, we need to power on the Synology NAS and have it connect to your local network. Then run the Synology Assistant, its job is to scan and find the NAS on your network. Once it’s found it should list like below.
You can now select the NAS, the default server name is called “DiskStation” and right-click> Install.
Agree the EULA.
Here you want to find the right version of DSM (synology software) for your version of NAS.
Head to the download center and find the latest version for your NAS and then upload the .pat file.
Next setup the network, will leave the default to have auto IP address assignment via DHCP.
Once you hit finish it will take a few minutes for the installation to apply.
Grab a cup of coffee and come back in 10 minutes.
Once that’s done you should be able to redirect if not access the IP it has assigned your NAS.
There is an option for you to setup QuickConnect. QuickConnect is Synology’s offering on reverse IP lookup, where you can hit a URL and it would reverse lookup find the NAS anywhere on the internet or your local network. I already have a QuickConnect URL ready so all I need to do is enter the URL. If this is your first time you can set up this now or later.
That’s it, this is your last step. Once you are done you should be prompt to log in to your NAS.
